A plain-spoken guide to managing every phase yourself — plus a planner that tracks your budget and checklist.

8 phases, start to keys

  1. 01

    Land & Permits

Confirm zoning allows a residential steel building, then secure permits before anything ships.

  2. 02

    Site Prep & Utilities

Clear, grade, and bring in water, power, and a driveway that can handle a delivery truck.

  3. 03

    Foundation & Slab

Most barndos sit on a monolithic slab. Plumbing rough-in goes under it, so get it right.

  4. 04

    Steel Shell Erection

Frames, purlins, girts, sheeting, doors. A crew can dry-in in a week or two.

  5. 05

    Rough-ins

Interior framing, then electrical, plumbing, and HVAC rough-ins and inspections.

  6. 06

    Insulation & Drywall

Closed-cell spray foam is the standard for steel to stop condensation.

  7. 07

    Interior Finishes

Cabinets, flooring, trim, fixtures, and paint — the most DIY-friendly phase.

  8. 08

    Final & Move-in

Final inspections, certificate of occupancy, landscaping, and punch list.
